North End hazards show
Most summers
Wildfire smoke & heat
Smoke from regional fires and more frequent heat waves reach the North End most summers, and many homes here don't have air conditioning.
Make a clean-air room
- Pick one room Ideally one with few windows and doors.
- Close it up Shut windows and doors. Turn off fans and HVAC that pull in outside air.
- Filter the air Use an air purifier, or build a box-fan filter.
- Check on neighbors Especially older neighbors and anyone with breathing problems.
Heat
- Know where cooling centers are. KCDEM lists them during heat events.
- Drink water, stay out of the midday sun, and check on people who live alone.
Wildfire ready
- Clear 5 feet around your house. Clean gutters and roof. (May's One Hour a Month task.)
