Winter storms & power outages

Tree-lined rural roads mean wind brings down lines and blocks roads. Outages here can last days, and wells need power to pump. The same storm can close Hansville Road.

Before

  • Be 2 Weeks Ready, with lights, batteries, and a battery or crank radio.
  • Well owners: fill water containers before the storm.
  • Charge phones and power banks. Keep the car's tank at least half full.
  • Plan safe heat. Know where KCDEM's warming shelters are.
  • Bookmark the PSE outage map. Sign up for alerts.
  • November's hour: utilities and generators.

During

  • Stay 35 feet from downed lines. Treat every line as live.
  • Keep the fridge and freezer closed.
  • No gas ovens, stoves, BBQs, or propane heaters for heat indoors.

Generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors and windows, never in a garage. Use a transfer switch and never backfeed. Install CO alarms.

After

  • Throw out perishable food that's been above 40°F.
  • Check on neighbors, especially anyone who lives alone or relies on power for medical equipment.
  • Report outages to PSE and downed trees on county roads to Kitsap County.
