Storing water

  • Use food-grade containers with screw caps. 2-liter soda bottles work.
  • Don't use milk jugs, glass, or old bleach bottles.

Treating water

  • Boiling is the surest method.
  • Bleach: 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of unscented 6–8.25% bleach per gallon. Stir and wait 30 minutes.

Hidden water at home

Your water heater, the toilet tank (not the bowl), and ice. After a quake, shut off the water main to keep the water in your pipes clean.

Private wells: no power means no pump. Fill containers before storms. Consider a transfer switch or a manual well pump. After flooding, get your well tested and disinfected (Kitsap Public Health District).
