Tsunami & shoreline

A Seattle Fault earthquake or an underwater landslide can send waves to low-lying Puget Sound shoreline within minutes, faster than an official alert can reach you.

Natural warning signs: strong shaking, the water pulling back, or a loud roar from the water. If you notice any of them, walk to high ground now. Go on foot, not by car.

Before

  • If you live, work, or walk on the shoreline, find your nearest high ground and walk the route. March's One Hour a Month task is this.
  • Get tsunami alerts: the NVS Tsunami Evacuation app and NOAA Weather Radio. See Get Alerts.
  • Keep a Grab & Go bag by the door.
  • Neighborhood walking routes are being developed with waterfront Block Captains.

After

Stay on high ground until officials say it's safe. More than one wave can come. Then follow The First Hour.
