October is earthquake month. This year the Great Washington ShakeOut is Thursday, October 15. Here's one hour that will help your household know what to do.
If the ground shakes, don't run outside. Most injuries happen from falling things and broken glass. Drop where you are, cover your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Your hour this month
- Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Do it in every room. Find the sturdy table or the inside wall.
- Pack an under-the-bed bag. Shoes, gloves, a flashlight, a whistle, spare glasses, and your OK / HELP sign.
- Check in with your block on October 15. After the drill, walk to your block's meeting spot and say hello.
On the shoreline? When the shaking stops, walk to high ground right away. Don't wait for an alert.
